Ammoniten Porcelaine Noire Porcelain Vase – Martin Freyer for Rosenthal Studio-Line, Germany, 1970s
A remarkable sculptural vase from Rosenthal Studio-Line's celebrated Porcelaine Noire collection, designed by Martin Freyer and titled Ammoniten. Combining geometric precision with organic inspiration, the design references the spiralling forms of prehistoric ammonite fossils, translated into a highly tactile relief composition that transforms porcelain into sculpture.
The vase's gently curved rectangular body is articulated by fine vertical striations, creating a subtle architectural backdrop for the dramatic central relief. Emerging from the matte black surface, the ammonite-inspired motif unfolds in concentric ridges and radiating textures, producing a striking interplay of shadow, depth, and movement. As light shifts across the surface, the relief reveals new layers of complexity, making the piece appear almost animated.
Executed in Rosenthal's patented Porcelaine Noire, the vase combines a velvety matte exterior with a glossy black interior. This innovative material, introduced by Rosenthal Studio-Line during its most experimental years, remains one of the most distinctive achievements in postwar European porcelain design.

Martin Freyer (1909–1975) was one of Rosenthal Studio-Line's most influential creative figures. Working across graphic design, exhibition design, stage design, and industrial design, he helped define the visual language of German postwar modernism. His Porcelaine Noire works are particularly sought after for their fusion of artistic experimentation and technical innovation.
The ammonite motif evokes natural history while remaining unmistakably modern, making this piece equally compelling as a functional vessel or as a standalone sculptural object in contemporary, minimalist, brutalist, or monochrome interiors.
