Carbonell passed away in November 2011. Since then, interest in his work has increased enormously. This work from 1963, "Pygmalion and Galatea", was created by the artist born in Cuba in 1918. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro in Havana, Cuba, along with other esteemed contemporaries, such as Wifredo Lam and Agustín Cárdenas. His talents made him a celebrity in his native Cuba. However, after the rise of Castro, Carbonell was exiled to the United States. There, his fame took off. He exhibited in various solo exhibitions at the famous Schoneman Galleries, the MoMA, Galeria Internacional (Venezuela), Randall Galleries, and many others. Other notable works include the "Bicentennial Eagle," which was presented at the White House and is now on display at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. One of Carbonell's most famous works is located in Miami: The Pillar of History on the Brickell Avenue Bridge.
