Product description
Charming hand-carved putto "at the honeycomb," "at the beehive," in light wood, vintage German manufacture, 20th century, circa 1940s-50s. This figure is based on the "Honigschlecker" ("honey taster"), created by the German Baroque sculptor Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer for the pilgrimage church in Birnau, Germany. The child is depicted standing, holding a beehive and tasting the honey on his finger. The sculpture is made of relatively light, unvarnished wood with a warm, nuanced golden patina that darkens in the recesses. The reliefs and edges, particularly around the hair, are polished and beautifully patinated. The putto rests on a small, square, carved base in the Baroque style. Unsigned. 28cm high, 12cm wide at its widest point, and approximately 6-7cm deep. Very good overall condition, without any cracks or significant damage, with a lovely patina and slight signs of wear. Approximately 600-700g.
