Poul Kjaerholm was a Danish designer and university professor. Following his apprenticeship as a carpenter and subsequent studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Kjaerholm began working as a furniture designer, designing furniture for his business friend Ejvind Kold Christiansen. The collaboration continued until the designer's death in 1980. In 1982, Fritz Hansen acquired the rights to all of Kjaerholm's designs from Kold Christiansen.
Kjaerholm's designs were exemplary in their straightforward formal language and the material combination of leather and steel. Poul Kjaerholm's work was characterized by his pursuit of the perfect seating furniture. During a trip to a Danish beach with his wife Hanne, he came up with the brilliant idea of making an impression of his wife's buttocks in the sand. The impression would serve as a template for a seating furniture piece. During the further development process, his wife even had to sit in oiled clay for hours to model an ergonomically perfect seat. The result of this charming story is the PK9 offered here, dating from 1960. One of the most perfect pieces of seating in design history. Former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing was so enthusiastic about this chair that he had it installed in the dining room of the presidential palace.
Poul Kjaerholm's works can now be seen in numerous renowned museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
