Jan van der Vaart for Rosenthal Studio-Line "Nautica" Bowl in Black Porcelain, Porcelaine Noire Series, 1980s
Germany / Netherlands
A rare and sculptural black porcelain bowl designed by Jan van der Vaart for Rosenthal Studio-Line, circa early 1980s. Part of the "Nautica" series within Rosenthal's trailblazing Porcelaine Noire collection, this piece is both poetic and architectural—evoking the tension between ancient ritual vessels and futuristic object design.
Design & Form
Van der Vaart’s "Nautica" series speaks the language of abstraction: forms that are at once symbolic, elemental, and infused with a nautical sensibility—like stylized sails, ship prows, or celestial instruments.
This wide, open bowl (approx. H 9 × W 22 × D 22 cm) is circular yet winged in its expression. The matte body is complemented by glossy, arched extensions that suggest movement, lift, or unfolding. It reads as both ceremonial object and modernist sculpture.
The interplay between matte and glossy black porcelain—a defining feature of Rosenthal’s Porcelaine Noire line—creates a subtle chiaroscuro of surface, light, and shadow. The deep black tone enhances the object’s sculptural gravity and refined restraint.
About Porcelaine Noire & Rosenthal Studio-Line
Developed in the late 1970s, Porcelaine Noire was an experimental Rosenthal line designed to explore the material and conceptual potential of black porcelain. Visionary designers—including Jan van der Vaart, Hans Theo Baumann, and Tapio Wirkkala—were invited to create forms that bridge fine art and functional design. The Studio-Line imprint reflects Rosenthal’s commitment to avant-garde design and artistic collaboration.
About the Designer
Jan van der Vaart (1931–2000) was a central figure in postwar European ceramics, known for his precise geometric language and sculptural approach rooted in Dutch Modernism, De Stijl, and Constructivism. His work often blurs the boundary between architecture and object, guided by a deep sense of proportion and restraint. His pieces are held in major museum collections including the Stedelijk Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
