Rosenthal Studio-Line – Sculptural Vase Duo by Jan van der Vaart
Glossy White Porcelain · Germany, mid-1980s
Presented here is a refined duo of sculptural porcelain vases designed by Jan van der Vaart for Rosenthal Studio-Line. United by material, geometry, and a disciplined postmodern vocabulary, the two vases form a carefully balanced pairing that explores rotation, volume, and architectural tension.
Van der Vaart’s hallmark language is immediately evident: pure geometry set in motion. Each vessel is built from a subtly twisted, faceted body—hexagonal in origin, but softened by rotation—so that light slides across the glossy white porcelain in shifting planes. The result is quiet dynamism: static objects that appear to turn in space.
The Pairing
Vase I – Larger Format
Height: 21 cm
Width / Depth: approx. 12 × 12 cm
Material: Glossy white porcelain
Design: Twisted, faceted geometric form
Origin: Germany
Condition: Excellent vintage condition
With its broader footprint and increased height, this vase reads as architectural and grounded—an anchor piece that emphasizes mass and rotation.
Vase II – Smaller Format (Model 3747/16, 1985)
Height: 16 cm
Width / Depth: approx. 10 × 10 cm
Material: Glossy white porcelain
Design: Matching twisted geometry in reduced scale
Origin: Germany
Year: 1985
Condition: Excellent vintage condition
More compact and restrained, this vase provides rhythmic counterpoint to the larger form, reinforcing the sculptural dialogue through proportion rather than ornament.
Together, the two pieces articulate van der Vaart’s interest in serial variation—the same idea expressed through different scales, each complete in itself yet stronger in conversation.
About the Designer
Jan van der Vaart was one of the most influential Dutch ceramists of the postwar period, known for introducing constructivist and modernist principles into ceramic design. Rejecting decoration in favor of structure, he treated vessels as spatial objects—where form, proportion, and material integrity carried the entire aesthetic weight. His work is represented in major museum collections, including MoMA New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
His collaborations with Rosenthal in the Studio-Line context brought this rigor into industrial porcelain, resulting in designs that remain intellectually precise and visually timeless.
