Some objects alone tell the story of an entire era. This imposing Wonder Agral lantern is one of them, a witness to industrious post-war France, when portable lighting was still a genuine work tool. Its history is inseparable from that of Wonder, one of the great French brands of the 20th century. Born during the First World War with the manufacturing of electric batteries, the company subsequently experienced considerable development. Its name accompanied several generations of French people through batteries, flashlights, and all those devices that finally made it possible to carry electricity with them. It was during this industrial adventure that the Wonder Agral appeared in the late 1940s, a lantern designed to provide powerful, autonomous lighting where no electrical installation was available.
Every aspect of the Agral was designed for utility. Its sturdy metal casing housed a large battery. Its large articulated handle allowed it to be easily grasped and carried from one building to another. At the front, the wide circular reflector concentrated the light to illuminate a path, a yard, or a work area. At the back, the red device served a different function, allowing the user's presence to be signaled in the dark. Our example retains its embossed "WONDER – TYPE AGRAL" marking and all the authenticity of its long existence. Its old brown paint has not been stripped or repainted. The rubbing on the edges, the marks on the casing and handle, the spots where the metal reappears, all form a true patina of use, intentionally preserved. On an old workbench, a console table, a shelf, or amidst a collection of technical objects, it becomes a remarkable piece of industrial decoration, authentic and immediately evocative. Height 22 cm with handle raised, width 11 cm, depth 13 cm. Significant and beautiful patina of use, consistent with its history. Functionality not verified, offered as a vintage collector's and decorative item.
