Product description
Some pieces are immediately recognized as rare. This is one of them. The shape is a wave-crested shell dish with an undulating rim and a handle sculpted with gilded striated waves. The outer band is golden ochre with a trellis pattern, highlighted by a gilded line on the inner edge. This type of shape, reserved for prestigious dessert services, was produced in limited editions in French decorating workshops of the Belle Époque. The interior decoration is an Imari-style Japonisme. Twisted black plum branches spread across a luminous white background, laden with coral red and olive green flowers. In the center, a pink peony blossoms on a rock. A bird in flight crosses the scene. A gilded flower on the right adds the touch of gold that balances the composition. This decorative vocabulary, inspired by Japanese Imari porcelain, was very fashionable in French workshops after the Universal Exhibition of 1878. The reverse bears two marks. A brown printed mark with the inscription FRANCE, mandatory for export to the United States from 1891, and a second hand-painted gilded mark, the decorator's monogram. The piece was blanked in the factory then decorated in an independent workshop, a common practice in Limoges and the Paris region between 1891 and 1910.
