Just one look at this piece is enough to understand its unique origin. Peacocks, flowering branches, precious colors, and touches of gold form an abundant decoration that embodies the entire atmosphere of Rhodian decorative arts. For centuries, the Greek island has held a singular position in the Eastern Mediterranean, at the crossroads of the Greek, Ottoman, and Levantine worlds. This history has left a true culture of decoration, particularly evident in the ceramics produced on the island during the 20th century: bold colors, abundant floral motifs, wonderful birds, and a strong penchant for Oriental-inspired compositions. This large vase, made by Kinoys in Rhodes, fits perfectly into this decorative tradition, as attested by its marking under the base. The piece thus asserts both its Rhodian manufacture, its decorative craftsmanship, and the use of 24-carat gold for its highlights. Against its ivory background, a majestic peacock is depicted among branches and flowers, accompanied by a second bird. Greens, purples, browns, and reds are punctuated with gold, which can be found in the plumage, the bands encircling the vase's body, its neck, and its base. A delicate frieze of small flowers completes the composition. Measuring 28 cm high and 13 cm in diameter, the piece has a remarkable presence. Placed alone on a console, a dresser, or a bookshelf, it becomes a true decorative object, bringing to an interior that precious and slightly exotic Mediterranean touch that makes all its charm. The gilding shows signs of age in places, particularly on the upper rim. Far from concealing these traces, we prefer to show them: they are part of the history of an antique piece that has been used and preserved.
