Chauvigny, a small town in Vienne, Poitou, has been home to a porcelain tradition since the 19th century, rooted in the region's geological resources. In the second half of the 20th century, the F.D. Chauvigny factory produced fine porcelain there, renowned for the quality of its white paste and the delicacy of its decorations. Its figurative pieces, inspired by rural France, were exported throughout Europe and beyond, driven by the enthusiasm for French tableware porcelain during the years . This butter dish depicts a reclining cow, with its legs folded, head raised, showcasing its small pointed ears and carefully sculpted expressive muzzle. Its open back, bordered by a thin red line, accommodates butter with a rustic elegance rarely found today. The inscription "Beurre Fermier" (Farm Butter), in black letters in the hollow of the piece, speaks volumes about the spirit in which it was designed: that of a rural and gourmet France, where farm butter reigned supreme on every table. The immaculate white porcelain is enlivened by a frieze of small multicolored wildflowers – red poppies, cornflowers, and daisies – running along the entire base. The glaze is luminous, the sculpting of the head is meticulous, and the anatomical details are rendered with an amusing precision. Beneath the piece, the orange stamp "F.D.
