This exceptional lounge chair is the PK27 model, designed in 1971 by Poul Kjærholm for E. Kold Christensen in Denmark. The PK27 is one of Kjærholm's rarer designs and was only produced for a short period until 1974.
In this design, Kjærholm's clear design language is combined with an unusually warm choice of materials. The supporting structure consists of an elegantly curved seat shell made of multi-layered laminated wood and maple veneer, resting on a base also made of molded bentwood with maple veneer. A characteristic feature is the ingenious suspension of the seat shell via elastic rubber elements, which provide a springy support while simultaneously visually lightening the construction.
The seat and backrest are fitted with a removable, custom-made cushion in soft, natural brown chamois leather, which echoes the geometric lines of the shell and is further emphasized by its distinctive, cross-stitched buttonwork. The back of the chair maintains a minimalist design, showcasing the high-quality maple veneer in its entirety. The slightly reclined seating position and the generous width of the shell lend the PK27 exceptional comfort while maintaining a sculptural presence – typical of Kjærholm's uncompromising combination of functionality and aesthetic precision.
