"Sweet Reverie" by Pino della Selva, Paris, 1980. Oil on canvas, framed. Pino della Selva, whose real name was Giuseppe Giuffrida, was a painter, sculptor, draftsman, and engraver, as well as a poet and art critic. Born on June 22, 1904, in Catania, he settled in Paris in 1931 and died on January 12, 1987, in Marseille. Pino della Selva received classical training from a Sicilian painter, Angelo d'Agata. He began exhibiting at Parisian salons in 1932. The portraits he painted, drew, or engraved were primarily of the poets whose books he illustrated. "This courageous young man is a consummate artist, and I predict a brilliant future for him," wrote Georges Normandy in the preface to the catalog of the artist's first solo exhibition in 1933. His painted work initially focused on social themes (blind people at work in 1925, laborers in 1932), comparable to those of the French artists Édouard Pignon and André Fougeron. He then positioned himself within the tradition of Symbolism and Surrealism. "His art goes far beyond Surrealism to reach the metaphysical and the mystical," observed Joël Millon and Claude Robert. "His work immerses the viewer in a strange atmosphere, a world of dreams and unreality." Pino della Selva's abstract period dates to the 1950s.
