Product description
Pierrefonds Art Nouveau / Early Art Deco Vase – France, ca. 1910s–1920s Blue–Grey Crystalline Glaze with Angular Twin Handles A wonderfully sculptural French studio-ceramic vase from the Pierrefonds manufactory, distinguished by its striking twin handles and the signature cratered, flowing glaze that makes Pierrefonds one of the most recognizable and coveted names in early 20th-century French ceramics. The body, with its taut, elongated amphora silhouette, is crowned by two sharply modelled handles—an architectural gesture that marks Pierrefonds’ confident move from late Art Nouveau into the more structured geometries of the Art Deco age. But it is the glaze that steals the show: a highly expressive cascade of blues, greys, and soft amber tones, pooling and crystallizing in that unmistakable coulure technique. This layering of matte, satin, and glossy zones reflects Pierrefonds’ intense research into high-temperature glazes—formulas still admired (and envied) by ceramicists today. On the base, the embossed Pierrefonds mark with the chalice emblem confirms its origin. Founded in 1903 in Oise by the Dufour family, Pierrefonds became a laboratory of experimentation, producing “volcanic,” crystalline, and running glazes that today place them in conversation with the great French innovators: Émile Lenoble, Denbac, and the Grès d’Alsace workshops. Their pieces appear in museum collections dedicated to French decorative arts of the Belle Époque and early modernism. The present vase, with its unusually broad shoulder and sharply folded handles, is a particularly expressive example—its glaze reminiscent of storm-touched skies over ochre earth.
