The CM172 dining table is an elegant example of the early modernism of Pierre Paulin, one of the most influential French designers of the twentieth century. Designed in the 1950s for Thonet, this table combines technical refinement with a clear, graphic design language.
The rectangular top in warm teak contrasts beautifully with the slender black metal frame, creating a balanced interplay between natural materials and industrial precision. The construction is light-looking yet extremely stable – characteristic of Paulin's quest for functionality without aesthetic compromise.
The CM172 fits within the Mid-Century Modern movement, which emphasized simplicity, rationality, and new production techniques. In French design history, this model marks an important phase in which designers moved away from decorative elements and opted for pure forms, ergonomics, and serial production. Paulin would later become world-famous for his organic seating (including for Artifort), but his early tables and desks already clearly demonstrate his exceptional sense of proportion and balance.
Thanks to its understated design, the CM172 table offered here remains surprisingly contemporary. The table effortlessly combines with both modern, minimalist interiors and warmer, eclectic settings. A timeless design object that naturally combines history, craftsmanship, and contemporary practicality.
In neat, ready-to-use condition, with a beautiful, distinctive patina on the frame and top, yet never distracting. Finished with a semi-matte, almost invisible coating that will protect the table from grease, dirt, and moisture.
