This canvas, titled 'Penalty,' is the first painting in an upcoming series that serves as an ode to victims of sexual abuse, intimate terror, and femicide. As a survivor, I have incorporated my own story into this canvas. I began the painting shortly after my escape. After years of processing, it has now been definitively completed in a new phase of my recovery. It is an emotional and raw work with deep meaning. The title 'Penalty' refers directly to the psychological and physical terror inflicted by the perpetrator. The yellow symbols at the bottom form my signature; they symbolize the exact date I fled. They represent, among other things, reclaiming my own life, regained freedom, and the beginning of a new chapter. This is the start of a series in which every victim will be acknowledged and honored. Scars are permanent; during and after recovery, they remain a part of your story, and that deserves to be acknowledged. Our bodies are strong, resilient, and raw. This is the reality of our story.
