The execution of the vase by Paul Baars belongs to the group of ambiguous visual phenomena and is referred to in the field as the figure-background phenomenon. By slightly shifting the two halves of the vase, it is possible to accentuate the effect of the visual illusion for the viewer.
In the contours of the outer edges of this fascinating combination, it is possible to distinguish even three faces. Due to the two half vases it is possible to choose multiple setups. Half a vase in front of a mirror gives a whole vase in the mirror image and the flowers in the vase form a bunch of flowers. In a first design , Paul Baars opted for a ceramic version. The two half vases in black and white were commissioned by Paul Baars and manufactured by the Dutch company Royal Tichelaar Makkum.
He also presented a version of his two half vases in plastic in the dimensions of 18 cm high and round.
