Cool vintage dining chair, model 'SB13' from the birch series by Cees Braakman, produced by Pastoe in the 1950s. A nice detail: Pastoe kept the model names simple. SB13 simply stands for 'Birch Chair', version 13.
We collected this chair from its original owners in Wormerveer. They bought it new in the late 1950s, along with a whole collection of other Pastoe furniture. Their house was absolutely chock-full of vintage Dutch design, like stepping into a candy store.
Because the chair primarily served as a side chair, it is in exceptionally good condition (especially considering its age). We lovingly refurbished it in our workshop. The solid beech frame and the teak-veneered seat and backrest have been thoroughly cleaned and refinished, while retaining its original character.
Now it shines again, as if it had just come off the production line! This particular model from the birch series is less common than other versions, which immediately makes it extra special. Of course, there are subtle signs of wear here and there. Small, superficial signs of a long life, but they don't detract from its appearance.
And good to know: it's surprisingly comfortable. You really have to work hard to get a "wooden butt" out of it.
The light frame combined with the dark seat and backrest creates a very attractive interplay of color. The design also has a wonderfully airy feel, partly because the seat and backrest appear to subtly float. Our favorite detail? The contrasting end caps. Simple, but it's precisely those small accents that make all the difference. Pure, understated, yet effective Dutch design.
