A beautiful sideboard from the "Made to Measure" series by Cees Braakman for Pastoe, produced in the 1950s. Braakman's "Made to Measure" series was one of the first modular furniture systems where customers could determine their own layout and dimensions. In terms of mounting, it was actually an early precursor to Ikea!
We collected this sideboard from its original owners in Wormerveer, who bought it new along with many other Pastoe pieces in the late 1950s. The house was chock-full of vintage Dutch design, a real museum/candy store!
Once it arrived at the workshop, it was fully and carefully restored. The teak wood is now beautifully restored, warm and full of charm, exactly as it was originally intended. We believe some of the most beautiful and high-quality teak has been used in the "Made to Measure" series; the photos speak for themselves. Here and there, the veneer still subtly shows its age, a sign of authenticity that we consciously preserve. People call it "patina," but we prefer character.
The cabinet features a sturdy, white Formica flap door (with some imperfections). When opened, it creates an ideal workspace, perfect for compact spaces. Under the flap, you'll find four drawers equipped with Braakman's signature dust-free technology, each with a beautiful wood grain. Behind the large door lies a wealth of storage space, complete with pull-out shelves. In short: a cabinet packed with clever technology and thoughtful details.
And then to realize that we had to lift all this technology to the ground floor through a narrow attic hatch. Oh well, we'd happily do that for such a gem. Simply beautiful, understated, and incredibly functional—the stuff of Dutch design dreams.
