Beautiful vintage desk model ‘EB32’, designed by Cees Braakman and produced by Pastoe in the 1950s. This model is part of Pastoe’s so-called birch series, in which Braakman experimented with lightweight constructions and a functional, modernist design language characteristic of post-war Dutch design.
This piece comes from the original owner in Soest, who purchased the desk new in the late 1950s. Over the past decades, it has been used with great care and attention and has been exceptionally well preserved.
Upon arrival at our workshop, the desk was partially restored, respecting its characteristic patina. The teak top and drawers have been nourished and finished with a new satin-matte protective coating. The grain comes beautifully back to life, and the wood has fully regained its warm, characterful color. The birch frame has been left in its original state, ensuring the furniture retains its authentic appearance while remaining fully functional. The drawer unit features two smooth-running drawers with Braakman's characteristic dust-free construction, a refined and functional detail typical of his work from this period. The desk feels solid and sturdy, while the design appears light and elegant thanks to the slender, playfully shaped legs. The beautiful contrast between the warm teak and the lighter birch wood makes this model particularly special. This version with a teak top and drawers is less common and is therefore relatively rare.
What makes this desk so strong is the balance between rationality and warmth. It is typical Braakman: sleek and well-thought-out in construction, yet not cool or distant. The design is clear and honest, with an almost architectural logic, while the use of materials adds softness and livability. It is precisely this tension that makes this design so timeless. Top-notch Dutch design!
