Cool vintage bookcase model ‘BE04’, designed by Cees Braakman and produced by Pastoe in the 1950s. This cabinet is part of Pastoe’s so-called oak series, a furniture line characterized by the use of, you guessed it, oak wood. Minimalist in design, practical to use, and typical of the progressive Dutch Design from the post-war reconstruction period.
This particular piece comes from the heirs of the first owners in Zaltbommel. Due to a renovation, the cabinet became redundant and eventually moved to external storage.
Given the cabinet’s original condition, it was decided to restore it with care, preserving its characteristic elements as much as possible. The wood has been refinished with a fresh coat of paint, and the flap mechanism has also been addressed, making it sturdy again and ensuring it opens and closes as intended. The only truly noteworthy point is a small missing piece of veneer on the right side, visible in the photos. The cabinet is crafted from solid oak and oak veneer and features three storage compartments for books and accessories, combined with a practical flap door. Behind this flap are handy reading pockets, originally intended for mail and paperwork. When unfolded, it creates a compact workspace—surprisingly functional and perfectly suited to the smaller homes for which this type of smart furniture was designed in the 1950s.
As we have come to expect from Cees Braakman, this design is also thought out down to the last detail: sleek, airy, and functional all at once. And certainly do not forget those distinctive legs of this cabinet! A beautiful example of Dutch craftsmanship and Dutch Design from the 1950s. A cabinet with history, character, and presence, completely ready for a new loving home.
