Beautiful vintage bookcase model ‘BB04’, designed by Cees Braakman and produced by Pastoe in the 1950s. This model belongs to Pastoe’s now iconic birch series, a progressive furniture line distinguished by the use of light birch wood, minimalist design, and playful yet elegant constructions.
This particular piece originates from Ghent and has always remained in the same family. It was originally purchased at the Verbeke furniture store (marked) and was part of an interior filled with furniture from the birch series, including an ‘MB01’ sofa and a ‘CB06’ cabinet.
The cabinet is in neat vintage condition and has been carefully restored with respect for the original design and material. The birch veneer has been given a new, fresh protective finish, and the flap is once again sturdy and functions properly. Naturally, there are some light signs of wear appropriate for its age, but it is precisely this that gives the cabinet its authentic charm and character. The cabinet features multiple open compartments for books, for example, and is equipped with a practical flap door behind which are handy compartments for paperwork and stationery. When unfolded, the flap serves as a compact workspace—a clever detail that perfectly suited the smaller homes of the post-war reconstruction period, yet remains just as relevant today.
What makes this model particularly special are the playful (and iconic) loop legs. They give the cabinet an airy, almost floating appearance and ensure that the design still looks surprisingly modern, even after 70 years. Combined with the clean lines and refined proportions, the result is a piece of furniture that remains interesting to look at from every angle.
