Pair of vintage Isamu Noguchi Akari 4N table lamps with original WB Form box
Description
A rare matching pair of vintage Isamu Noguchi Akari light sculptures, model 4N, handmade in Japan by Ozeki.
The lamps are constructed from traditional washi paper over a bamboo framework and have developed a beautiful warm amber patina. When illuminated, they produce the soft, atmospheric glow for which Noguchi’s Akari lamps are known.
Both shades retain the printed Isamu Noguchi name together with the characteristic sun-and-moon mark.
The pair comes with its original period WB Form box and the original “New Akari” assembly instructions from WB Form Limited, Switzerland. The box carries a handwritten Dutch note reading:
“twee stuks hotelschakeling zonder knipper”
This refers to two lamps with the matching switchless electrical fittings included with the pair. Both lamps have European plugs and are intended to be operated through a wall switch or switched socket.
The 4N was designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1968. The WB Form packaging, instruction leaflet, construction and electrical fittings indicate that these are older European-distributed examples, probably dating from before the current Vitra-distributed production. I cannot guarantee a precise production year.
I bought the three Akari lamps in my collection together in the Netherlands in 2012. This listing is specifically for the two matching lamps that were stored together in the box marked “twee stuks.”
Condition
Both lamps are complete and structurally intact, with their original bamboo frameworks, metal supports, fittings and electrical cables.
They are in used vintage condition. The washi paper shows natural ageing, patina, some wrinkles, small marks and several small puncture holes. There are no major open tears, and the paper has not separated from the framework.
The lamps have been used and enjoyed for many years rather than kept as untouched collector’s pieces. Their warm, uneven patina is part of their character and is especially attractive when illuminated.
The original box and instruction leaflet also show wear consistent with age and storage.
Please study all photographs carefully. I have tried to show the condition and individual imperfections as clearly and honestly as possible. Additional detailed photographs are available on request.
The electrical fittings are working, but because of their age, a buyer may wish to have them checked by a qualified electrician before regular use. LED bulbs are recommended.
