Pair of bookends carved with birds in regula and marble signed Frécourt art deco
Created from the ingenuity of French master bronze sculptor Maurice Frécourt (1890-1961), this pair of bookends is a fine testament to his love of Belle Époque naturalistic expressionism. This artist had the good fortune to live through the two most influential periods in the history of early 20th-century design: Art Nouveau and Art Deco, and his work is a skilful blend of poetry and sculptural artistry with the hallmarks of these styles: organic realism, punctuated by poetic geometry!
After graduating from the École des Beaux Arts de Paris, Maurice Frécourt was best known for his work during the Art Deco period, in which he was most active, particularly in the 1920s, when his subjects were the animal kingdom.
A rectangular white marble base, a subject in black and grey regula representing birds on a branch, perched in a lively scene, almost like a frozen moment... This is Frécourt's world: a surprising blend of love for wildlife, and a symbiosis with the organic and geometric of Art Deco.
Signed Frécourt, the artist's name on the base of the regule, it is followed by the name of Gallot, founder and contemporary of Frécourt.
