Pair of PJ-SI-48-A X leg lounge chairs, designed by Pierre Jeanneret for Chandigarh, India, circa 1960.These incredible chairs are defined by their distinctive X-shaped solid teak frames. The crossing elements form the legs and provide structural support for the seat and armrests, creating a clear architectural silhouette. Their low proportions and gently reclined backrests give the design a relaxed character while retaining the minimalistic construction associated with Jeanneret’s Chandigarh furniture. This pair is reupholstered in rich black pony across the seats, backrests and padded armrests. The naturally varied surface of the upholstery creates a strong contrast with the warm tone and visible grain of the wooden frames.Originally created for public institutions in Chandigarh, the chairs represent the city’s mid-century minimalist identity. Its material origins are equally significant: the wood was sourced from trees cleared during Chandigarh’s construction, an early anticipation of sustainable approaches to furniture making. With their timeless presence, these chairs integrate naturally into diverse interiors, adding warmth and serenity and a luxurious feel. Suitable for living rooms, libraries, or contemplative spaces, they stand as emblematic works of modern design history.Pierre Jeanneret (1896-1967) is recognised as a pivotal figure in modernism. His collaborations with his cousin Le Corbusier are especially significant, particularly their codification of modernist architectural principles in Five Points Towards a New Architecture (1926). Towards the end of their careers the pair also designed a utopian modernist city in India: Chandigarh, and Jeanneret designed some of his most celebrated furniture designs for the administrative buildings in the city.Appears in the literature: “Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret: Chandigarh, India,” Galerie Patrick Seguin, pp. 248 – 249, 288 and “Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret: The Indian Adventure,” Touchaleaume and Moreau, p. 572.Provenance: Panjab University, Kasturba Gandhi Hall, Girls’ Hostel No. 4, chair number 054 and 033, Chandigarh, India
