Pair of Chiavari chairs, in solid brass, model with high back, 1950s production. Brass with original patina, we can polish it at no additional cost.
Originally designed by Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi and manufactured from the early 19th century in the Ligurian town of Chiavari, Italy. The Chiavari chair, also known as Chiavarina, or Tiffany chair, is a wooden chair of Ligurian design. Much later the Chiavari chair was made of brass, like those for sale here. Chiavarina was created in 1807 by a cabinetmaker from Chiavari on the north-western coast of Italy, Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi, who at the invitation of the president of the Economic Society of Chiavari, the marquis Stefano Rivarola, reworked some chairs in the French Empire style, simplifying the elements decorative and lightening the structural elements. The chair was successful and soon many factories were opened in Chiavari and in the neighboring cities. When Gaetano Descalzi died in 1855, about 600 workers were making the Chiavari chairs. The chair was praised by Carlo Alberto of Savoy, Napoleon III and the sculptor Antonio Canova.
