A spectacular pair of large, naturalistic wall platters in polychrome earthenware, made by Álvaro José in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, at the beginning of the 20th century. Each platter, measuring 32 cm in diameter, features a marine scene in very high relief: one centered with a spider crab, the other with a lobster, surrounded by mussels, shells, and marine vegetation on a sandy-textured background. The rims are enlivened with polychrome glazes in deep shades of green, blue, brown, and ochre. The richness of the modeling is particularly remarkable: the crustaceans are treated almost like applied sculptures, with meticulous work on their carapaces, legs, and antennae. The various shells and plant elements reinforce the naturalistic character typical of the Palissy ceramic tradition of Caldas da Rainha. Both platters bear the old impressed mark "Álvaro José – Caldas" on the underside. Sold only as a pair.
