There are objects you don't put away. You place them, you hang them, and they transform a wall or a shelf into something else. These two plates are among them. The cobalt blue is deep, almost night. The iron red shines like an ember. The gold runs along the edges and weaves into every detail of the design. At the center, a vase full of flowers placed on an orange checkered terrace. Around it, blooming peonies, dense foliage, stylized clouds that slowly turn towards the border. This is Imari decor at its most accomplished: generous, colorful, perfectly balanced. These round white porcelain plates, 26 cm in diameter, bear on the reverse a red square stamp in kanji characters, the mark of the Arita workshops (Saga prefecture, Japan). Produced in the late Meiji or Taisho era, circa , intended for export to Europe. Careful gilding, brilliant glaze, slight traces of wear on the gold rim, consistent with age. No cracks. Sold as a pair. Hung side by side, they make a wall. Placed on a sideboard, they make a collection.
