Product description
Rare Pair of Jan Bočan Lounge Chairs for the Czechoslovak Embassy in Stockholm, 1972. This rare pair of lounge chairs was designed by Czech architect and designer Jan Bočan as part of the complete interior concept for the Czechoslovak Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden, completed in 1972. The embassy building, designed by architects Jan Bočan, Jan Šrámek and Karel Štěpánský, is considered one of the most remarkable examples of Czechoslovak Brutalist architecture of the period. Bočan was also responsible for much of its bespoke interior furnishings, creating a distinctive collection of furniture specifically for the building. The armchairs feature an expressive sculptural construction made of bent laminated wood with walnut veneer. Their substantial geometric form, low seating position and characteristic angular profile strongly reflect the architectural language of the embassy itself. Both chairs have been professionally restored with great respect for their original appearance. The wooden structures have been carefully refinished and the seats and backrests have been reupholstered in high-quality faux leather, carefully selected for its color and texture to closely resemble the original upholstery. The restoration was carried out with particular attention to preserving the original proportions, character and visual integrity of the design. The furniture designed for the Stockholm Embassy was created specifically for this prestigious architectural commission and was not conceived as standard commercial production. Surviving examples are increasingly sought after by collectors of post-war Czechoslovak design, architectural furniture and Brutalist interiors. A rare opportunity to acquire a matching pair of Jan Bočan lounge chairs with an important architectural provenance. The last few pictures show original Embassy interiors from the Embassy archives.
