Product description
As early as the 17th century, the manufactures of Nevers were among the first in France to embrace porcelains from Asia and distill their spirit into popular faience. From this encounter arose the Chinoiserie style, where imaginary characters evolve in luxuriant gardens, surrounded by stylized flowers and exotic plants. These two hand-painted plates fully embody this tradition, executed with the freedom of stroke and chromatic freshness that distinguish genuine artisanal decorations from industrial productions. The first depicts an Oriental character holding a parasol, walking through a stylized garden, accompanied by enigmatic handwritten signs. The second reveals a sage with a conical hat holding a scroll, surrounded by delicately composed vegetation. Each scene is different, establishing a true dialogue between the two pieces rather than a mere repetition. The rich floral decoration in cobalt blue camaieu harmoniously frames the central scenes, applied with a brush with a spontaneity that constitutes the full charm of these pieces. The network of natural crackle in the glaze bestows upon each plate a material depth that only time can impart. One can imagine the morning light playing on the crazed glaze, making the cobalt blue shimmer, revealing the delicacy of the brushstrokes. On the reverse are the markings "Hand Painted," one handwritten with the number 106, the other stamped in blue with the number 112, testifying to artisanal work carried out within the same French workshop of the 20th century on two distinct models. Diameter 28 cm. No chips, no cracks. Additional details: - Brand: Peint à la main France - Style: Chinoiseries - Material: Faïence - Colour: bleu cobalt - Period: XXe siècle
