This pair of Chiavari typical chairs was designed by Gaetano Descalzi in the city of Chiavari in Italy, where they have since been produced in various models.
Made of brown lacquered beech and upholstered in chenille velvet.
The chairs have been restored and upholstered.
Chiavari was created in 1807 by the carpenter Chiavari Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi, who behind the invitation of the Marquis Stefano Rivarola, reworked some models of French chairs linked to the Empire style, simplifying the decorative apparatus and reducing the sections of the structural elements.
The chair was successful and soon many producers were born in Chiavari and neighboring municipalities: at the death of Gaetano Descalzi in 1855, there were about 600 workers employed in the sector. Chiavarina was appreciated by Carlo Alberto di Savoia, Napoleon III, and by the sculptor Antonio Canova.
