From the Silk Roads to Collection Halls These two carved solid wood stirrups are direct testimonies to the equestrian craftsmanship of the great caravan regions of Central Asia. Their remarkably precise incised decoration — fan palmettes, interlocking ogee arches, rosettes, geometric trellises — is characteristic of the ornamental vocabulary of the great artisanal centers of the Bukhara and Samarkand region in the 19th century. Exceptional Carving Every surface is covered with remarkably fine recessed decoration: the radiating central palmette, the rosette friezes, the superimposed ogee arches, and the frieze of triangles at the base attest to a craftsman with a perfect mastery of the Islamic decorative repertoire. The wood — dense, tight-grained, regional mulberry or walnut — has developed a deep and homogeneous patina over decades of use.
