A pair of very fine, slightly concave, antique Gien earthenware plates, "Coq et Pivoines" (Rooster and Peonies) pattern. They feature a Japanese-inspired design of a rooster, peonies, flowering branches, and a blue frieze on the rim. The decoration is applied using a blue transfer technique, enhanced and hand-colored in orange-red, yellow, and green. Being antique, they bear the Gien monogram on the reverse, in a variant similar to the mark from the 1900s, here without the word "France."
26 cm in diameter and approximately 3 cm high. Very good overall condition, with some fine, old crazing of the glaze, relatively numerous but discreet cutlery scratches, and small traces of patina. Approximately 450 grams each.
