Pair of hand-painted Limoges porcelain tureens, made in the 1960s. Ø 27 cm h 14 cm. Limoges porcelain is a type of hard-paste porcelain produced in the city of Limoges, France, and the surrounding areas, starting from the late 18th century. It is renowned for its high quality, its fineness, and its variety of decorations. The discovery of kaolin deposits, an essential mineral for hard-paste porcelain production, near Limoges in the late 18th century, initiated local production. Proximity to raw materials fostered the development of numerous porcelain factories in the region. Limoges porcelain is prized for its whiteness, its translucency, and its strength. Decorations range from classic and floral motifs to modern and contemporary designs. Production includes dinnerware, decorative objects, statues, and jewelry. Numerous manufacturers have contributed to the fame of Limoges porcelain, including Haviland, Bernardaud, and Royal Limoges. Each manufacturer has developed its own style and decoration techniques. In December 2017, the French National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) granted Limoges porcelain a Geographical Indication.
