This painting, oil on panel, purchased approximately 60 years ago from an antique dealer in the Gooi region, is by artist Lion Schulman (1851-1943), Laren School, trained by Koekoek and De Rijk, among others.
In 1875, at the request of Arti et Amicitae, King Willem III, he received a royal grant, allowing him to take lessons with Jan Koekoek (1840-1912). Koekoek painted many landscapes in a romantic style, in which a hint of Impressionism is discernible. Jan Koekoek also worked extensively in England. Schulman accompanied him several times and later worked with him for a time in London. Lion sold the landscapes and other works he created during this period through the London art dealership of Jan's brother, Hermanus Jr. Koekoek.
After England, Lion Schulman worked with Hermanus for a short period in Gelderland. Lion opened three shops where art and art supplies were sold. In 1890 a business was opened in Rotterdam on Beursplein, in 1894 one in Hilversum on Kerkstraat, and in 1898 one in Laren on the Brink.
