Paul van Zoelen
Born: The Hague
Education: Academy of Fine Arts
Oppositions such as nature and culture, the organic and the constructed, memory and knowledge form the basis for Paul van Zoelen's abstract paintings. The compositions give the impression of abstracted landscapes. He achieves this by using techniques employed by traditional landscape painters, such as foreground, repoussoir, view through, and horizon.
He himself says, "The landscape as a metaphor for travel. The journey itself is an intended detour. After returning home, the distance, the original destination of the journey, becomes truly visible." Paul van Zoelen takes numerous photographs during his many travels, which are compiled into landscape panoramas in the studio and serve as the starting point for paintings. With Paul van Zoelen, you walk through universal landscapes: compositions of different regions and atmospheres. Different landscape types are assembled from multiple memories of the most diverse areas. Paul van Zoelen constantly moves in the tension between figuration and abstraction. He explores the possibilities of the medium used, and also has a deep-rooted interest in nature.
