Product description
This painting by the Belgian artist Henri de Cocker depicts an expressive scene of two figures, characterized by powerful brushwork and an earthy color palette. The work illustrates De Cocker's distinctive style, where the emphasis lies on form and atmosphere rather than detailed representation. The artwork is executed in oil on canvas and is presented in a classic wooden frame with dark green velvet inlay and silver-colored accents. The composition is dominated by warm brown, ochre, and green tones, with subtle red details that draw attention. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower left corner. The work is in vintage condition befitting its age, with unfortunately some damage to the frame and a small spot on the canvas. The paint layer displays characteristic texture, and the original frame contributes to the authentic appearance of the whole. Henri de Cocker (1908–1978) was a painter who was already ahead of his time. In 1942, he held his first exhibition at the Pan Hall in Ghent. Until 1948, he painted in an expressionist style. Stays in Paris in 1948 and later marked a turning point toward a lighter period that lasted until 1952. A trip through Spain in 1953 resulted in a series of works with a surreal and sometimes poetic slant. This was followed by an abstract period: Cubism, collages, Madonnas and stain compositions, Tachism—here too, he evolved from dark to lighter. In 1960, he won the Art Critics' Prize with his exhibition of abstract works at the "Le Zodiaque" gallery in Brussels. From 1963 onwards, he drew inspiration once again from rural life and became the landscape expressionist again. Fauvist work followed from 1970. He died in 1978 when he was hit by a truck while cycling.
