A documented mid-century portrait by German painter Oskar H. Hagemann (1888–1984), painted in 1952. Titled “Mädchenkopf” (“Head of a Girl”), the work depicts a young girl wearing a red ribbon and deep red dress against a warm, restrained background. The direct gaze, finely modelled facial features and looser treatment of the hair, clothing and surrounding space are characteristic of Hagemann’s portrait painting. The work is signed “Oskar H. Hagemann” and dated 1952 in the upper left corner. Of particular interest is its documented exhibition history: this exact painting is illustrated in the catalogue of the III. Deutsche Kunstausstellung in Dresden, 1953, one of the major post-war German art exhibitions of the period. The same motif was also reproduced historically as an artist postcard, where the original work is listed with dimensions of 40 × 32 cm, exactly matching the present painting. Hagemann studied at the Grand Ducal Baden Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and became a master student of Wilhelm Trübner. He developed a figurative portrait style influenced by German Impressionism, with a strong focus on personality, light and painterly expression. Following his return to Karlsruhe in 1951, he entered a renewed period of artistic activity in which children’s portraits became an important part of his oeuvre. This painting dates precisely from that period. The artwork is presented in its historic frame, measuring approximately 50 × 42 cm overall. The reverse retains the original label of Erich Jordan – Werkstatt für kunstgewerbliche Bilderrahmung, Potsdam, a traditional Potsdam framing workshop with a long-standing regional history. The historic label is still preserved on the backing. A particularly appealing and well-documented example of Hagemann’s post-war portraiture, combining artist attribution, exhibition history, historical reproduction and original period framing.
