Product description
A rare pair of Portex stacking chairs, designed in 1945 by Danish designers Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and manufactured by Fritz Hansen in Denmark. The design combines a remarkably light, functional construction with the understated design language typical of post-war Scandinavian design. The chairs are made of beechwood and are characterized by their slender, slightly splayed legs and elegantly curved backrests. A curved molded plywood backrest and the gently contoured seat ensure a clean silhouette and comfortable seating. The ingenious stacking system is a particularly distinctive feature. The chairs can be nested together to save space – a functional detail that gives the design its name, Portex, and its unmistakable character. Visible wood joints and the small attachment points of the backrest emphasize the structural clarity of the design. The original Fritz Hansen FH / Made in Denmark manufacturer's stamp on the underside confirms the chairs' origin. The warm beechwood displays a beautiful patina, developed over decades, with varying color nuances and visible signs of wear. This aging gives the pair an authentic vintage character. Condition: Good vintage condition with signs of age and use. The wood surfaces show scratches, abrasions, minor discoloration, and in some places more pronounced marks, particularly on the seats.
