For sale is an original painted portrait of a man, titled “Arthur”, executed in watercolour/gouache on heavy professional artist’s paper by Schut Apeldoorn.
The work is dated 14.V.40 – 14 May 1940, a historically significant date. On that day, Rotterdam was bombed and the Netherlands decided to surrender; the official capitulation was signed on 15 May 1940.
It is a finely painted and characterful male portrait in a realistic style. On the reverse is the original Schut Apeldoorn blind stamp, from the well-known Dutch manufacturer of high-quality artist and watercolour paper.
The work comes from Hans Wagner of Utrecht.
