He comes from a family of artists, his grandfather being the creator of the orchards at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. He developed a passion for painting at an early age, entering the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris in 1955, where he spent five years studying mural art: stained glass, tapestry, mosaics and frescoes. In 1960, he studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he worked in oils, lithographs, pastels and gouache. Influenced by the great masters Cézanne, Braque and Duffy, Gaveau was also inspired by music and lyricism. His talent was soon recognized, and in 1963 he was awarded first prize and a scholarship to the Antwerp Academy. In 1965, at the age of 25, he had his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Angle Aigu in Paris. In 1968, he was nominated for the Prix de la Critique sponsored by Galerie Saint Placide in Paris. Gaveau's work is internationally recognized. His art is often described as "symphonic", as the elements of each composition seem perfectly balanced, at once out of touch with reality yet not abstract, giving them an immediately identifiable, mysterious and singular aspect.
