The city of Mashad, capital of the huge province of Khorasan, is located in the north-east of Iran. With 3 million inhabitants, it is the second largest city and also the holiest city in Iran. Every year, more than 12 million pilgrims travel to the city to visit the shrine of the eighth Shiite Imam, Imam Reza, who is buried here. Mashad has a long and rich history of carpet making and is known for producing good quality carpets in all possible sizes and often in larger sizes. The wool used in these rugs comes from Khorasan and is considered one of the best qualities of wool in the country. This makes Mashad carpets particularly soft to the touch. Mashad carpets often resemble Keshan carpets. They usually have a large central medallion in shades of red and dark blue, sometimes with a distinct purple hue, adorned with lighter floral Herati patterns.
