In the heart of Iran, at the foot of the Zagros Mountains and the desert on the right, lies the city of Isfahan, the former capital of Persia during the Safavid dynasty (1501-1736). It is often described as the most elegant and beautiful city in the country and is home to some of the country's finest weavers. Some of the most exquisite examples of Persian carpet art come from Isfahan.Isfahan carpets are very finely woven and cut quite short to show off the pattern better. Silk is used to emphasize certain details such as floral patterns, and the warp can be either silk or cotton. Isfahan rugs are usually marked with "khefts" on the edges on the back of the rug. The number of different colored warp threads is evenly spaced and varies between 7 and 16 over a span of 1 meter. The higher the number of threads, the finer and denser the carpet.
