China has a long and distinguished carpet tradition. The art of carpet making here dates back to the 15th century. The designs and patterns were originally inspired by Chinese porcelain, landscapes, majestic dragons, and other religious symbols. The patterns on Chinese carpets are generally cut in relief, giving them the typical three-dimensional appearance for which they are famous. Chinese carpets are made of soft wool and have a rather thick and dense pile. They are very strong and durable, yet also very soft and comfortable to walk on. In China, there are also more exclusive silk carpets, which are knotted entirely from silk. These carpets are extremely rare on the market and sometimes even contain elements of pure gold thread. Chinese silk carpets have a very high knot density and are largely inspired by patterns of ancient Persian carpet art.
