Product description
The price listed in the advertisement refers to one bar stool. A special price can be negotiated for the purchase of all six. The "DUPLEX STOOL" model has not been in production since 2003 and is very rarely available used. Prices achieved at international auctions are constantly rising. Usually, only one stool or at most a pair is offered. We are offering a Duplex bar stool designed by Javier Mariscal in the 1980s. This is an original, not a contemporary reproduction. The DUPLEX STOOL model is exhibited as an art object in numerous international museums. Who is Javier Mariscal? * Early career and underground: Mariscal began in Barcelona in the 1970s and was part of the underground comics scene that developed from the prevailing social and political circumstances of the time. * * Memphis Group: He gained international attention when he became part of the first collection of the influential Italian design group Memphis in 1981, where he designed, among other things, the somewhat unconventional furniture pieces "Hilton" and "Table à Café." * Multidisciplinary Approach: Mariscal works across a variety of disciplines, including graphic design, furniture design, product design, and film, and is known for his distinctive style, often influenced by Pop Art and Mediterranean heritage. * Multidisciplinary Approach: Mariscal works across a variety of disciplines, including graphic design, furniture design, product design, and film, and is known for his distinctive style, often influenced by Pop Art and Mediterranean heritage. Duplex: One of his first works * Duplex Bar Stool: Designed by Mariscal in 1980, the colorful and asymmetrical "Duplex" bar stool was one of his first pieces of furniture and an early incentive for the Memphis Group to take notice of his work. * Meubles Amorales: Shortly before, he had worked with his friend and collaborator Fernando Salas at the "Bar de Valencia," which led to his first furniture collection, "Meubles Amorales," and his collaboration with the Memphis Group. * His style is characterized by a versatile, multidisciplinary approach with a personal, often humorous and colorful expression. With this stool, Mariscal created a milestone of form and color. Designed in 1980 as part of the interior design project for the Duplex Bar in Valencia, the Duplex stool has the feel of a sculpture. It's an object that, with its bright colors, defines the Memphis style. In 1981, the company BD Ediciones de Diseéo began commercializing the stool, a process that continued until 2003. A classic in Javier Mariscal's career. It consists of a black faux leather seat and three colored legs in red, blue, and yellow, connected and stabilized by a white ring. The stools are in very good condition. Two show minimal signs of wear, which could easily be repaired. The stool is approximately 83 cm high. The seat has a diameter of approximately 45 cm. The Duplex stool is exhibited in the collections of the Vitra Design Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Barcelona Design Museum, among others. In 1973, he drew the underground comic "El Rollo enmascarado," copies of which were confiscated by the government two months after its publication. From 1975 to 1976, Mariscal lived on Ibiza, where he produced further comics and his first designs for seating furniture. In 1977, his first solo exhibition, "Gran Hotel" (featuring stained glass, drawings, and sculptures), took place at the Galeria Mec Mec in Barcelona. In 1979, he designed the lettering BAR-CEL-ONA, through whose drawn letter silhouettes one looks as if through a window onto scenes beyond. In 1980, together with Fernando Salas, he designed the Dúplex Bar in Valencia, furnishing it with his now-famous "Dúplex" bar stools and the "Valencia" lamp (both for B.D. Ediciones). In 1981, the Galería Vinçon hosted the exhibition "Muebles amorales" featuring Mariscal's postmodern designs, and subsequently, at the invitation of Ettore Sottsass, he participated in the 1981 "Memphis, an International Style" exhibition in Milan. In the following years, he designed further furniture as well as textiles, ceramics, and glass objects. Javier Mariscal's designs are always humorous and reminiscent of comic book characters. This comic book style also influenced his graphic design work. Javier Mariscal created both the mascot "Cobi" for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and the mascot "Twipsy" for Expo 2000 in Hanover. According to Mariscal himself, his work is influenced by "Calder and Vasquez, Miró and Mickey Mouse, Matisse and Crumb, all equally important." Since 1989, Javier Mariscal has worked in his own studio, "Estudio Mariscal," located in a former tannery in Palo Alto, Barcelona. There, he designs furniture for renowned manufacturers such as Magis and Moroso, porcelain for Rosenthal, and illustrations for various magazines. The Duplex Stool was developed in 1980 as part of the interior design project for the Duplex Bar in Valencia. With its vibrant colors, it looks like something out of a comic book. Mariscal breaks the stereotype of a stool by omitting one of the four legs, creating a play of lines and movement. The eccentric Spanish designer Javier Mariscal is known worldwide for Cobi, the cartoon dog that became the official mascot of the Barcelona Olympic Games. Described as "crazy" and "colorful," Mariscal is incredibly versatile: a groundbreaking furniture designer, artist, photographer, and graphic designer who has also worked on corporate identities. Mariscal has exhibited at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and is participating in the Kassel Documentation, which is accompanied by several retrospectives and exhibitions such as "Mariscal Drawing Life" at the Design Museum in London, "Mariscal en La Pedrera," and "The Art Player" in Korea. His illustrations and comics have graced the covers of The New Yorker, El País, and the Japanese magazine Apo. His travels to California, Japan, Paris, and Portugal have had a decisive influence on his drawings. He collaborates with designers, engineers, and architects such as Arata Isozaki and with companies like Memphis, Akaba, Bidasoa, BD Ediciones de Diseño, Moroso, Alessi, Nani Marquina, and Magis. In 1999, Mariscal won the Premio Nacional de Diseño and a Goya Award for "Chico & Rita," the animated film he co-directed with Fernando Trueba. They were also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for this film.
