An offer for design enthusiasts and collectors:
The ASLAK model was designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1946 – around the same time as the DOMUS CHAIR – but didn't go into production until 1957/58, eventually becoming an undisputed classic of seating furniture!
In 2020, this masterpiece was reissued by ARTEK (founded by Alvar Aalto, among others) and is still in production there today.
The item offered here was manufactured by Asko in the 1960s/70s for the European market and is in its original condition!
Note: Photo 2 shows a historical photograph of the artist with his chair, as well as hand-drawn sketches from a design study.
Construction:
Extremely stable construction made of molded birch plywood. The elements were joined partly with screws and partly with elaborate, solid wood joints and firmly glued. Seat and backrest made of molded plywood, lightly padded and upholstered in orange corduroy.
The original manufacturer's label is located under the seat!
The chair is ergonomically designed and surprisingly comfortable!

Asko – founded in 1918 by Aukusti Avonius in Lahti, Finland – is the oldest and largest Finnish furniture manufacturer. In addition to Ilmari Tapiovaara and Eero Aarnio, who designed the famous Ball Chair for Asko in the 1960s, numerous renowned designers have contributed to the "Mid-Century Asko Collection."
Designer:
Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914–1999) was a renowned Finnish interior architect and designer. He graduated in 1937 from the Institute of Furniture Design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki. In his early years, he also worked for Le Corbusier in Paris and for Alvar Aalto in London. After his time as a designer and artistic director at Asko, he taught at various universities and colleges. During a visiting professorship at the Institute of Design in Chicago in 1953, he met the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. From 1951 to 1960, Ilmari Tapiovaara received six gold medals at the Milan Triennale for his work—more than any other designer worldwide. His distinguished students later included Eero Aarnio and Yjrö Kukkapuro.
If you're lucky, you might even find him on a 2-euro coin minted in his honor that is still in circulation!
