Product description
Classic space-age, organic design from the early 60s! An original Tulip Chair "Model 115" by Maurice Burke, swivel chair with an aluminum base and a plastic seat shell, produced by Arkana (GB) from the extremely successful "Star Collection".
Note: The last two photos show various models from the Star Collection from an early advertising catalog, as well as screenshots from Star Trek, Star Trek and Dr. Who productions.
Maurice Burke's models were highly sought after by film makers and also made their "appearance" in the James Bond classic: Casino Royal (1967) in the parody with Peter Sellers and Woody Allen.
Construction:
Swivel base made of aluminum (with return mechanism, Automatic Return Swivel - US patent from 1963) and 4-Star aluminum base. Organically shaped plastic seat shell with seat cushion, originally fabric-covered - fabrics: chestnut, red-brown. All original foot glides present! Marking under the seat shell!
The chair is very comfortable!

Manufacturer and designer:
Maurice Burke (1921 - 2013) was a Canadian furniture designer and entrepreneur with French roots. In 1950, he moved with his family to Los Angeles/California, worked for Herman Miller, met Ray and Charles Eames and Harry Bertoia there and decided to become a furniture manufacturer himself. After initial difficulties, he enjoyed great success with his company Burke Inc. founded in Dallas, Texas (1959-1963). Among other things, the designs for the Star Collection were created here; but legal disputes with Knoll International regarding the Tulip Chair by Eero Saarinen also had to be settled!
In 1963, he sold Burke Inc., moved to Europe and founded the Arkana company in the UK, which produced very successful furniture in the Mid - Century Modern style until 1974, including furniture by Geoffrey Harcourt.
However, his eventful company history continued and moved into the next generation with his son Duncan!
Arkana chairs are coveted collector's items today!

Condition: Used furniture - chair and cushions have been completely cleaned and are in good condition! The white-coated aluminum base has a few small knocks / repairs. The seat shell shows age-related, superficial craquelure in places (see photo), which is not considered damage and does not affect the stability! There is a tiny spot of paint (varnish) on the underside of the cushion.
