Half-Doll orientalist Salammbô in Thuringian porcelain early 20th century
A toy, an accessory? This half-doll is so much more! From the fragile, sophisticated world of early 20th-century German Thuringian porcelain, this half-figurine, also known as the "Half-Doll", is a true collector's item!
Created in the early 20th century, probably during the Art Deco period (1910-1930), this porcelain doll bust was not intended for children's play, but for decorating wooden boxes, sewing textiles as box ornaments, and collecting in display cases, as the small holes at the base of the figurine allow it to be sewn to box lids.
Fine and delicate, the details of this "Lady Figurine" are incredibly realistic. But its beauty lies in its rarity: its orientalist theme, with its Punic-Egyptian garb, evokes Romanticism's love of antiquity and the Orient of the period, and in particular the figure in Gustave Flaubert's Salammbô, from the novel of the same name. A woman of power, or a victim of the society of her time, Salammbô is a Carthaginian woman, priestess of the goddess Tanit, seeking to recover the veil of her goddess, stolen by mercenaries, in order to restore order to the city, even if it means sacrificing her own life. Ambivalent and tragic, she is a respectable character who chose her convictions for the good of all.
