I spent my youth struggling—preferably on two fronts simultaneously—with my parental home and with the breakthrough of my passion for painting," says the painter of noble descent during her 90th birthday dinner speech at Hotel Schiller in Amsterdam.
Jeanne Bieruma Oosting was born in Leeuwarden into a wealthy patrician family. Her mother is the daughter of Rijn Harixma thoe Slooten, who lived on the Frisian estate Lauswolt. When she was nine, the family moved to the De Cloese country estate near Lochem, and there her passion for painting was ignited. She took lessons from Paul Bodifee, Frits Grabijn, Samuel Jessurum de Mesquita, and Albert Roelofs, and subsequently attended the Hague Academy. In 1929 Jeanne moved to Paris for eleven years, where she mastered graphic techniques with André Lhote and Stanley William Hayter. She worked hard and long hours. "Fortunately, I had health as strong as a Ford," she says in "Jeanne Bieruma Oosting, an overview" from 1988.
Jeanne's parents fiercely opposed her artistic career and repeatedly threatened to cut off her allowance. When her mother died in 1955, she was able to purchase the house Het Elger in Almen, Achterhoek region, where she spent her summers for forty years. On her 70th birthday, she established the Jeanne Oosting Prize, awarded annually to a Dutch figurative artist. She herself remained faithful to figurative art throughout her life: still lifes, landscapes, and interiors were her favorite themes.
