Two antique glasses of fine French crystal with a green base. The green color is obtained by adding uranium dioxide to the glass. This element causes the glass to turn neon green under ultraviolet light. Dimensions: 12x4.5 cm. There is an insignificant dent in one of the feet (see photo).
It has been used to color glass since Roman times, but its use in tableware became popular between 1860 and 1930 thanks to renowned glass manufacturers such as Riedel in Austria and Baccarat in France. And as is common with exotic items, collectors are on the lookout for these ancient and rare pieces.
Their use is perfectly safe, as the amount used is usually less than 2% and the radiation exposure is negligible compared to the natural radiation sources we are exposed to on a daily basis. However, we do not recommend using objects made of uranium glass for food purposes.
