Old African Assembled Stool – Carved Hardwood – West Africa, early 20th century
African assembled stool (knock-down / slot-joint type) carved from solid hardwood, originating from West Africa, probably the Benin / Burkina Faso / northern Togo region, and dating to the early to mid-20th century. The stool consists of three interlocking elements and is decorated with stylised animal motifs, including a crocodile or serpent-like figure with geometric cross-hatched patterns on the backrest and seat.
The surface shows a natural aged patina with expected wear, abrasion and age-related cracks. The construction is entirely traditional, with no modern screws, nails or glue visible. The stool is complete and structurally sound. Purchased in the 1970s in Africa from a private collection of a Dutch collector.
